Monastic Week

Of Study and Silence

19-26 September 2026 - Busseto, Italy

Monastery S. Maria degli Angeli
25 Spots | University Students

What does the monastic environment offer?

An ecosystem of intellectual renewal

No digital distractions

The absence of devices and notifications fosters the deep concentration that cognitive neuroscience links to improvements in attention, memory, and problem-solving.

Stabilitas loci

A set place and a shared routine provide the foundation that encourages regular study habits and a sense of belonging to a community of seekers.

Study as studium

The monastic tradition combines study, work, and prayer. Knowledge is not merely the accumulation of information; it is an openness to the truth and a calling to service.

Inner Time

The monastic rhythm slows down the passage of time and unleashes creativity: once the mind steps out of reactive mode, it can generate its own thoughts.

What is uniquely human about the act of knowing in the age of artificial intelligence? The role of intuition, wonder, and openness to the transcendent.

Thursday

Beauty as a form of knowledge

From Plato to Dostoevsky: beauty is not merely an accessory to thought, but a path to truth. Poetry, contemplation, and knowledge.

Your intellectual commitment will be all the more fruitful and effective the more solid and harmonious the relationship between study and prayer is.

What is the purpose of these days?

    Knowledge requires silence

Hyper-specialization, individualism, and distracting technologies are fragmenting our attention span, our connections with others, and our sense of purpose in learning. Young people accumulate information but lack the wisdom to discern what is essential. The retreat offers a week of immersion in the monastic rhythm: study, silence, community, and reflection, in a 15th-century monastery.
